Emporos customers know the value of having FSA-Eligible Items flagged as "Qualified" automatically by their MerchantSoft POS... and now it looks like the long-awaited category of sunscreen may soon be added.
SIGIS' latest newsletter says:
"... we are reviewing product descriptions of sunscreen and sunblock products to determine which broad spectrum, SPF 15+ items can be added to the list."
"Note that we will add only those items that can be clearly identified as SPF 15 or higher and that provide protection against both ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) and ultraviolet A radiation (UVA). These products will not require an Rx for purchase with a health care debit card at SIGIS certified merchants."
All this, just in time for winter! :)

One of the resources we've provided our pharmacy community is a whitepaper to explain some of the important factors to consider to help you grow your pharmacy retail business. Here is a section from that whitepaper:
Enhance the Customer’s Shopping Experience through Pharmacy Integration
While integration helps with having a more efficient system and paper reduction may be your goal, an integrated POS can easily become part of your workflow. The two big benefits realized by connecting the POS to pharmacy are keeping staff informed and making patients happy. Here is how that works with an integrated system: Simply scanning the prescription bar code will bring every prescription that is waiting for a specific patient up on the POS screen. For instance, if a patient has called in another one, the POS will show both as ready for pickup. Or if a prescription is on hold, the register staff will have this information for the patient, depending on the level of integration. No doubt you can see from this process that patients are happy not to make a special return trip for a missed prescription.
Another reason for having integration is streamlining your workflow. Now, with a scan of the prescription bar code, your clerks are capturing signatures and the prescriptions sales data at the POS making this information available to your pharmacists behind the counter. With bi-directional or two-way integration, your staff enters prescription data in the pharmacy; appropriate parts of this information, such as patient name, prescription number, co-payment, and a prescription’s pickup status are all immediately ready to be viewed on the POS system.
This link or integration can work to make a pharmacist’s life easier and to let the focus move from running a store to working with patients. The key is that integration helps you improve your workflow by letting you know more about where your prescriptions are and aren’t. The benefits of POS to workflow do not stop with the ability to share information about a prescription between the pharmacy system and the POS. Moving patient signatures from paper to digital is also a big part of the solution pharmacies are seeking. Now you can use the POS as the entry point into your workflow for all signatures. When your staff scans at checkout, the POS system generates prompts for signatures for the Rx Log, Counseling, Safety Caps, and HIPAA, if it is still needed.

Here are a few quotes:
Once the POS software is in place, most merchants tend to jump in and start right away using the technology. However, without taking the time to define the business objectives, they may only grasp a few benefits from the software.
The two big benefits realized by connecting the POS to pharmacy are keeping the staff informed and making patients happy.
Inputting price changes manually is the old way and time consuming. Having the ability to load price changes directly from your wholesaler into your POS via the Internet is an increasingly common way to handle this task.
Customer service is the critical element that makes the difference. One way to provide superior service is with careful inventory management.
PO Receiving can be initiated by two methods, through a Purchase Order and through a 'No PO'. Emporos' Kim Meachum will guide you through the differences between the different methods, in respect to information required and receiving functions.
